Of all the members of Weiss, Omi regarded Aya as the least jaded. It was a peculiar judgement to make, perhaps, if one hadn’t made as deep a study of him as Omi had. As the oldest member of Weiss, he had been given Aya’s file before the other man joined the group, and had found the contrast between what the file had led him to believe Aya – Ran – would be, and the man himself, absolutely fascinating. Aya had been through many horrible things, certainly, but he had come out the other side still believing with the tenacity of a small child in the innate justice of the world. It was the reason for his deep depression, because Aya simply would not allow himself that the world wasn’t fair, and reacted when exposed to its unfairness with indignation and misery. Omi found Aya fascinating, because the possibility had never entered his mind that Takatori might, in the end, walk away unpunished. It never occurred to him that his sister might not wake up. Aya ran into danger without the slightest hint of fear, because he simply did not think that there was any way that he would die before his goals had been accomplished. As far as he was concerned, that was just not how the world worked – no matter how many times the world contradicted him. Omi had grown up knowing the world wasn’t fair, and that some people needed to be punished because of it. He had expected Aya to be like him, and had become endlessly fascinated on learning that he wasn’t. That fascination had turned into admiration, then into affection, and finally he realised he was in love. Which meant it was a shame that everything that made him love Aya made it impossible for Aya to love him. |
