Final Fantasy VII Recs
From, Zack by Sorceress Fantasia. (Zack/Cloud)
Normally, AUs of this type simply do not appeal to me, largely because the characters either end up repeating the same events of the original canon (which makes me wonder why the author bothered in the first place) or the characters are horribly OOC (which again, makes me wonder why the author bothered in the first place).

The interaction between Zack and Kunsel and Zack and Yuffie nailed this fic for me, though. Even in an AU, the author managed to get exactly the right tone, even despite the fact that Zack himself is a bit OOC. That nailed it for me.

Mistaken by mystiri_1 (Rufus/Cloud)
I tend to shy away from stories with Rufus in them, purely because manipulation is so entrenched in his personality that it's extremely difficult to write him both in character and not being abusively domineering.

The reason I liked this fic was that it looked at the controlling way Rufus behaves towards everyone around him, looked at the way Cloud never stops fighting against something, and acknowledged that yes, such a relationship might start out relatively okay, but it probably wouldn't end that way.

Schism by Mengde. (FFVII/FFX)
This is a multipart crossover fic that melds the FFVII and FFX worlds beautifully. Although I don't think the timing works as well as it might, it works well enough not to detract from the rest of the fic. It's a long, involved story and I'm hesitant to explain why I liked it so much for that reason alone - suffice to say it is well-written and very entertaining. Go read.

Thorns by Vathara.
The fic summary is, "What if Aeris found unexpected help before Zack broke out? AU." It's a pretty accurate summary, insofar as explaining what the fic is about, but it misses a heck of a lot of plot. Some of the plot requires you to suspend disbelief for a while (more than FF7 normally asks you to do, I mean), but nevertheless it's a well-thought-out, very enjoyable fic. Go read!

Referee by mystiri_1. (Genesis/Sephiroth)
Generally speaking, Sephiroth/Genesis doesn't appeal to me. Mostly because I just wanted to spork Genesis in the eye during Crisis Core, I must admit, but also because the whole Sephiroth-Genesis-Angeal trio seemed to have depths and facets to it that romantic entanglements just don't cover, so relationship fics about any combination of the three tend not to sit well with me.

This one, however, felt just about right. Plus it was funny. :)
