Ran-ka very helpfully emailed me with the link to [[Massage Therapy]] (under [[Gravitation]]), so that's one fic that can be taken off the "#No link" tag. :D

I have no idea where my affection for this pairing came from, but it's fic like this that remind me of why I still hold that affection. These snippets managed to capture the essence of what I love about Zoro/Nami.

Any and all Sakura/Lee must be encouraged, but that's not why I'm reccing this. This particular fic could have been ripped from canon in the years Naruto's gone, it's so in keeping with Sakura and Lee's characters. Parts of it didn't sit well with me, but that's solely because //I// wouldn't write a relationship between them as beginning at that point in their lives - not because it wouldn't have begun then or because they are in any way out of character. I mean . . . gah, it's just so wonderful. ::wibbles::

Happy New Year! Holy crap, it's 2008 already. Yikes. Also added a new tag, of my absolute favourite fic. It is, unsurprisingly, the #Favourites tag. I'm also //incredibly// picky about what goes on there, so there's not much on that tag yet.

[[999 Miles to Go|http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1360494/1/999_Miles_to_Go]] by s1ncer1ty.

//Ayame wants nothing more than to spend some Quality Time (tm) with his brother Yuki. Yuki wants nothing more than to strangle Ayame. Can even a near-death experience bridge that gap?//

It is very hard to write Ayame and keep him in character. Which is a shame, because as a friend of mine once said, Ayame is 100% pure electric fun. Next to Kyou, he's my favourite FB character.

Anyway. Digressions aside, s1ncer1ty has kept Ayame beautifully in character. Yuki, too. This fic covers a car journey between the two and the conversation during it. It's an idea of how a reconciliation between Yuki and Ayame might start - not be resolved or even continued, but start. As such, it's a beautifully done little fic and well worth the read.

So read it.
[[A Better Mousetrap|http://community.livejournal.com/lapisofferings/9558.html]] by lazzchan.

Yes! I'd been waiting for a fic that would point out the potential absurdity in Naruto and Sakura's determination to return Sasuke to Konoha. What if he doesn't //want// to come back? Are they just going to keep fetching him whenever he runs off? What sort of things might they use in an attempt to get him to stay? And, at the end of the day, why would they //want// him to stay if he's determined to go? This pokes fun of that BIIIIIIG hole in the current plot. XD
[[A Darkening Dawn|http://gundamwing.fanworkrecs.com/fics/a/a_darkening_dawn.htm]] by Ancient Lady, on [[Gundam Wing @ Fanworkrecs.com|http://gundamwing.fanworkrecs.com/]].

I suppose it's amusing that I found this fic on another recommendations site, but then I respect Suzume's opinion. I probably wouldn't have read it if I didn't. I almost didn't rec this fic, solely because of a line about Christmas cards near the end which broke the mood for me in a bad way. However, it occurred to me that if the only reason I might not have recced a fic was //one line// in anotherwise masterfully well-written fic, then that's passing the line from pickiness into outright pedantry. The rest of the fic is written in a beautiful, slow progression that follows Lex's own slow emotional progression and fits the story perfectly. A calm, warm read.

Lee has a question, and Sasuke is the only one who can answer it for him. Once again, the manner of revelation of Sasuke and Naruto's relationship is very much a cliche over practically every fandom I've been in, and Naruto is //definitely// out of character, but it's cute. So, yah. Read.

I have a confession to make - much to my shame, I have a secret affection for mpreg fics. ::hangs head:: I know, I know, I have betrayed all of womankind and those who like to read believable fiction. However, even though this affection continues to baffle even me (and just the warning probably sent you running screaming) I would like to say that this fic is quite definitely //not// a typical mpreg.

For one thing, it's all het pairings. For another thing, the pairings (such that they are) barely come into it. For a third thing, I have never laughed so hard in my life as when I read these fics.

"A Stork for Sessha" is the first fic in this series. In it, the author gives an . . . ::ahem:: alternative view on how Kenji was conceived and born. Basically, Kaoru wants to have a baby and Kenshin thinks she's too physically weak to handle it, so in comes Koonotori - a stork (read: fairy) who was booted out of her old job by the council and is looking to do something miraculous to get back in. So we have a pregnant Kenshin who suffers from mood swings, an aching back, his sakabatou being hidden from him and somehow both an overprotective Sano and an overprotective Saitou. "A Stork for Sano" follows along on much the same lines, with Aoshi thrown in the middle (and twins). The style of writing is what cracks me up - the author has a very dry sense of humour, and this is the sort of situation which calls for a very dry sense of humour. Where another author would make a big deal out of Kenshin's mood swings etc. to the point that he'd be feminised - well, more feminised than he is already - Imbrium Iridum manages to avoid that by treating everything as though it's an LSD trip and therefore not to be taken seriously.

The main reason I'm posting this here, however, is that I really really hope she was serious when she mentioned doing another fic along these lines entitled "A Stork for Saitou". ::rolls around on the floor laughing her ass off:: Can't you just SEE it? God! What I would not give to read a fic like that done in Imbrium Iridum's unique style!

So please, go and nag her to continue "A Stork for Sano" - and to follow it up with "A Stork for Saitou".

It's not an especially new idea, that Naruto must have learned some pretty good accounting tricks since he was living on his own from age tiny. Considering how little interaction Naruto and Ino have during the series, this fic makes the pairing surprisingly plausible. Of course, anyone appealing to Naruto's loneliness is plausible, but still. The fic is from Ino's perspective, detailing the progression of their relationship from her point of view - which began as a way to rebel against her parents, but gradually changed into something much more.

I'm not keen on Raoul/Katze fics. I'm not keen on Katze/anyone fics, despite him being one of my favourite characters. The reason I get pissy about this is that people seem to like blithely ignoring the fact that castrating a man means //they can't have sex//. It's impossible. It's like saying that a person with no legs can walk.

Despite that, I truly liked this fic. Set after the end of the ~OVAs, it shows both Raoul and Katze trying to cope with Iason's death, and in the process becoming attached to each other. Raoul grows to understand why Iason loved Riki so much, and how a Blondie could want to have sex with a pet. It also follows Guy and Kirie, with both of them regaining a little sanity on the way. The characterisations are damn near as perfect as they're gonna get, and the plot is fantastic. Read the bloody thing, already.

//Through the looking glass and into the fire. . . . Ken wakes up to find out his life could have been different, cleaner. Only how clean is it, and will it be worth the past he knows to live in this future?//

Once again, Mami-san has managed to stun me, completely and utterly. In essence, Ken passes from the world of Weiss that we know into an entirely different one, where he and Schuldig are lovers, he was never an assassin, Farfarello never killed his family, there is no Schwarz, there is no Weiss, you name it, it's different. Including personalities. Mami-san has very carefully taken the characters and, using their altered pasts, changed them into ones who are themselves, but they're not. They're similar enough that you have to look carefully to see the differences, but they're there.

However, that's not the main reason I liked this fic. What I really liked was the slow and subtle build-up of a relationship between Schuldig and Ken. It starts off slow, but before long you're thinking "this is both right and wrong at the same time" and wondering whether or not the Ken we know would be better off with Schuldig than the one who was there originally, or if that would be the worst possible thing to happen - and what exactly it is that everyone isn't telling Ken. And even when you think everything's been revealed, it hasn't - the ending is a sucker-punch in the gut, but in a good way.

Read it. Right now.

Sure, the Gundam boys are interesting and fun to read about, but there's only so much you can do with them before it becomes repetitive. Lasha Lee avoided that by gradually introducing various ~OCs with various personalities (Gage! Ahem) that interact with the canon characters of the series in such a way as to keep the fics alive and interesting. Lasha Lee combines some action (not much, though) with humour, angst, plot twists and a variety of tempos in an original way that's certainly not paralleled anywhere else in the fandom. Go read!
[[And Time Again|http://www.fanfiction.net/s/705333/1/And_Time_Again]] by sf.

This is a schoolfic, and an AU. There are others of this kind of fic out there, but the author here manages to actually write it //well//, which is a first. The purpose of this fic is not to have the author pair up the characters however s/he wishes, while maligning their personalities in the necessary ways to make it work (and make the characters similar enough to themselves) but actual //plot//. ::gasp:: The P-word! While this fic is unfinished, it shows great potential as the characters evolve and are set on the same path as in their previous lives. The author manages to work flashbacks and surfacing memories into the fic with remarkably skill, and stays far away from any form of cheesiness all the way through it.

Oftentimes I place a warning by any ongoing fic I rec to say that I may remove it, dependent on the way future updates take the fic. I don't think I'll be doing that with this one.

From the very first moment Ishida appeared in Bleach, I loved the interaction between him and Ichigo, largely because snarky banter fills me with glee. However, I am aware that it's very difficult to write Ichigo/Ishida properly. (AKA without falling into various yaoi cliches and wrenching them both out of character. Although if you go by places like FF.Net, it's very difficult to write //any// pairing without doing that.) As a result, fics that truly capture what I love about their interaction are few and far between, and this is the one I go back to when I despair of ever finding well-written interaction between these two. There are a lot of them about, after all, and some of them - like this one - are incredibly well written. Since there's not much of actual plot-like substance to the fic, telling you anything about it would give it all away, so suffice to say that it's a nice, smutty ~WAFF-y fic.
The purpose of this site is to let people know of pieces of online fiction that I feel they cannot possibly miss, because those pieces of fiction are just so damned good. This series of fics is monumentally silly. Several thousand years after the events of ~LotR, the fellowship has been granted immortality and are living in a small house in the North of England. This fic is basically just an excuse for Kiba and Shino to fuck. I'm not overly keen on it, but I'm reccing it due to it being the only vaguely in-character and legible Kiba/Shino I've ever read - plus despite the switch into smut-mode coming across as too sudden, it has a good lead-up in the sense of Kiba being his usual arrogant, boisterous self and turning all of that on a Shino who suddenly has no place to run. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely certain these two are wholly in character, but then the series - manga or animated - doesn't show enough of them for me to be able to say for certain. The author's grammar is shaky, too - for example, "You're shaking Shino" is used instead of "You're shaking, Shino" which annoys me because it's sloppy and changes the entire meaning of the sentence. These can be overlooked, however, and thus while the fic could be better it's enjoyable as it is.

Smut, smut, and more smut. //Hot// smut, which - in the context of the fic - is both literal and figurative. The fic is basically a PWP, but what I loved about it was that the author spent a fair bit of time building up to the actual sex so that it didn't merely appear like the arbitrary whim of the writer that two of her favourite boys end up bonking - instead, it seems almost like the "logical" conclusion of the situation they're placed in. Which, even with a PWP, is what I believe every author should strive for.

I //loved// this fic. Seriously. I have a definite preference for Kakashi/Gai over Kakashi/Iruka - the latter sacrifices a depth to the relationship for the sake of prettiness - and when you get right down to it, Gai is weird but he's also a very loveable character.

Anyway, moving on to the fic itself - this basically starts out with Gai challenging Kakashi to a duel to see who is the better lover, thanks to a few ideas a drunken Anko planted in his head. I loved Kakashi's reactions to everything, not least because they're so consistent with his character, almost as much as I loved the fact that the author managed to make Gai naive without making him stupid. A lot of people can't seem to tell the difference. Everything about this fic was so wonderful, I only winced a tiny bit when I came across "sennin" where it should have been "sannin". In essence, Quatre and Treize fight a battle of wills over several chess games - but that's not the only game going on. There are subtle overtones throughout the fic that you can't fail to pick up on, yet remain subtle. I like fics which get into the meat of the characters, and work out reasons for them to act certain ways. If you have a good enough grasp of human nature and psychology, you can make any of the characters do anything and if you're good enough, people will believe it. That description does //not// cover just how funny this fic is, though - and despite being so funny I had to bite down on my hand to keep from waking the rest of the house up, it also had the lovely touch of Sasuke wanting to hide being gay for the sake of not hurting Sakura, and also not knowing how to say that in order to get Naruto to shut up. The second chapter of the fic is a small sequel, which is slightly more sappy and slightly less funny, but adds a few nice touches if you wanted more of that fic universe.

So I promised myself that I would never rec another Smallville fic, what with knowing eff-all of the canon. Then I got bored and started watching daytime TV about a week ago, and channel-hopped onto an episode of Smallville. It was so hilariously bad that I immediately left to look up Smallville fanfiction, and came across these two.

To properly understand these fics, you have to know a bit of the DC comics canon as well as a bit about Smallville - namely, that DC comics canon is on crack, because the most recent incarnation of Superboy is as the test-tube son of Lex Luthor and Superman. No, I'm not kidding. He's called ~Kon-El, later Conner Kent, and in the comics, Kon is an enormous dork.

That dorkdom has not changed in these fics, although quite a lot else has - the founding difference being that Lex has adopted him and raised him as his son instead of leaving him in a vat to be force-grown. The fics are from Conner's perspective, which leads to two stories so incredibly funny that I couldn't actually stop myself from reccing them. They're very well-crafted, such that it's easy to believe that Conner is actually nine years old in the first fic, and also give a perfect outsider's image of Lex Luthor and Clark Kent in the universe created by the author. (And let's face it, the universe she's created isn't all that much less plausible than the original universes.)

Read and enjoy!
!!!What is a ~TiddlyWiki and how do I operate it?
[[TiddlyWiki|http://www.tiddlywiki.com]] is a one-page Wikipedia created by Jeremy Ruston. He describes it as a "non-linear personal notebook", which despite sounding like jargon is actually pretty accurate.

!!!One page? Huh?
Yes, this site is all on one page. So, I hear you say, how do the links work, then?

When you click on a link, it will open up a new entry just like this one, via some ~JavaScript magic that flies straight over my head. Navigating through these can get confusing, as you might imagine, but I've done my best to make it simpler by using the tags.

You can find the tags by going to the right-hand menu, clicking "Tags" and selecting the one you want, or you can use the [[TabTags]] page, which will open up a new entry containing all the tags used in this document. From there, select the tag you want, and then choose whether to open all the recs on that tag or just open individual ones.

If you already have a rec open, then mousing over that rec highlights the tag box in the upper right-hand corner; if you're looking for other recs in that pairing or series, clicking on the tags there will work just the same as clicking on them anywhere else.

!!!Help, there are too many entries open! How do I get rid of them?
The easiest way is by finding "close all" in the menu on the right-hand side and clicking on it. That, as you might have guessed, closes all currently open entries.

However, you may want to keep one or several entries open but close the others. To aid in this, each entry will have a small group of buttons on the right-hand side, above the title - as with the tag box, the colour of these will change to become more noticeable when you mouseover the entry. The only important ones to know about are "close" and "close others"; clicking "close" will close the entry you're looking at, and clicking "close others" will close every entry //except// the one you're looking at.

You may also want to share a rec with someone else, without having to direct them around the site. For this, the "permaview" option in the sidebar will create a new link in the address bar on your web browser that makes sure all the entries you currently have open will show up if you share that link with someone.

That's about all you need to know to navigate this site. Have fun!

After his wife's death, Ron finds himself noticing things he never saw before. Mostly in Harry. It's not a build-up of a new relationship or a new facet to a relationship, it's a discovery of one that was there all along, with the typical ~Ron-and-Harry interaction in the meantime.

It's been so long since I first read this fic that I can't quite remember the precise reason I decided to rec it, apart from the fact that it's very well written and makes your throat clench with the angst. Ed succeeds in restoring Al's body, but it comes with a hefty cost that leaves the brothers more dependent on one another than ever - or at least, it leaves Ed dependent on Al. The fic emphasises the depth and strength of the bond the brothers have (with smex, of course, because why would you want to leave that out?) even when the circumstances surrounding them have twisted the bond into something painful both for them to endure, and for others to observe.

When I read this fic, I had a vague idea who Saeki was, but absolutely no idea about Ryou. Now I've watched past the Rokkaku arc in the ~PoT series, and I know both - but rereading hasn't changed my opinion of the fic. It's beautifully done (even if I can't quite figure out the purpose of putting certain phrases in italics) and Ryou is written in a very angsty and fucked-up sort of way. A bittersweet, sad fic.

I //loved// this fic. Which considering that Quatre is underage in it and I hate fics that smack of paedophilia, is a bloody good achievement.

As for the paedophilia thing: I kept forgetting Quatre's age all throughout this. He seems so much older than he's meant to be, and that's a good thing. Basically, in this fic Quatre seduces Treize in order to obtain information and buy time to get the Maganacs away - but he does it for //fun//. That's what makes this fic such a joy to read - usually if someone writes about a seduction for the mission's sake, it's filled with angst and is an excuse to torture the character. The author here, however, shows that Quatre really doesn't mind what he's doing because he gets a kick out of it.

Go read the bloody thing already!

I mentioned in the [[Santa/Sakuya rec|Unlikely Ones]] how I can not like a character in the series but love them in a fic. Well, it seems the same with characters I'm indifferent about - I could care less about Sakuya, but both the recs on this page have him in them. And once again, this fic is smutty. There are three parts written, hopefully more to come and over half of those parts is taken up in lemon.

Not that I'm complaining.

It's pretty easy to tell from the beginning what kind of fic this is going to be. Even in the very early stages of the fic, Yoiko and Bonnejeane are beginning to develop the relationship between the two, and even beginning to develop Sakuya's character in order to show how Yuki is changing him. From my knowledge of the Gundam Wing fics these two have written, I would say that this is destined to become an extraordinarily good fic - //if// they ever bloody write more on it, that is.

Yeah. Enough of my rambling. Read, already.

(Note for non-US residents: eggplant is aubergine.)

It wasn't until I got to the very last line of this fic that I decided to rec it, simply because the very last line of the fic just //made// the story. Up until that point, it had been an enjoyable, smutty read, but nothing more - and yet somehow, the last line brought out all the subtle undertones of the fic in a manner that would have taken another author a few more pages to do. And that, if nothing else, is a sign of a very well-crafted fic.
[[Embracing the Shadows|http://lunatic.deep-ice.com/fics/aoe_ets01.html]] by Aoe, on [[The Temple of Lunacy|http://lunatic.deep-ice.com]].

//Schuldig becomes interested in Aya, and starts playing with his perceptions of the world, and of Weiss and Schwarz. Somewhere in the game, however, he gets too caught up in it, and so does Crawford.//

Let's start by taking this from a Crawford/Schuldig point of view. Why? Well, why not?

In Aoe's universe Crawford and Schuldig do not have a happy beginning to their relationship, and it takes them a very, very long time to get to the point where they can admit exactly how deep they are in - which, coincidentally, happens at the beginning of this fic. The sudden introduction of Aya to the equation causes friction and jealousy as Schuldig starts playing a game with him so he can avoid thinking about himself and Crawford, but after a while Crawford joins in as well because both of them can see the other man in him. While this fic does have a happy ending, there is more than a little angst involved as both parties find themselves unconsciously replaying their unhappy earlier relationship with an increasingly unstable Aya. The dynamic between the characters is much like it would if this were to happen in real life, and through alternating ~POVs you get to see each character's take on what's going on as well as explanations for their various behaviour - and believe me, they're good explanations. Hell, the whole fic is good.

Now for the Aya side of things:

He has no idea what's going on. Literally not a clue. His paranoia and general fucked-up-ness take it in turns to put a spin on things which, while it isn't exactly untrue, doesn't change as the circumstances do. Even when it seems he's figured stuff out, trust me, he hasn't.

Now for why I liked this fic:

. . . sheesh. I just asked myself to pinpoint a reason without simply saying "all of it", because that's pretty much what I liked. Okay then. As a general thing in fiction with a good deal of angst, it's usually good if there's some comic relief in there somewhere. If nothing else, it makes the lows that much lower and sets you up for the fall pretty damn well. In this fic Aoe gives us some //incredibly// funny scenes (like the discussion about underwear and Aya drunk off his ass, not to mention Schuldig sulking in a //parking lot// of all places), and yet they make what would be an otherwise monotonously angsty fic which is a chore to get through an utter delight to read.

I've reread this fic about four times since it was finished. I don't think I'm ever going to get tired of it.

This is the sequel to a Yohji/Ken fic, [[Seeing the Light|http://lunatic.deep-ice.com/fics/aoe_light1.htm]]. I don't think it's entirely necessary for you to read that one before this one, but you can if you want to. It's an enjoyable read in it's own right.
[[Eveil|http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2141824/1/]] by Asuka Kureru.

I cannot pinpoint why I want to rec this fic. There are a vast number of FMA fics around about what Ed and Al would put up with for each other, but somehow this one struck a stronger chord than most. Don't ask me why. It's about Ed not going to the toilet because he doesn't want to leave Al, for crap's sake. That might be the reason in and of itself, though - yes, we know they'd die for each other and (possibly) kill for each other, but putting up with easily remedied bodily discomforts for one another is something entirely different.
[[Exorcism|http://community.livejournal.com/merry_smutmas/60893.html]] by gmth.

This is a dark fic, with dubious consent. The first time I read it I didn't like it - despite the very good premise and equally good writing, by the end of the fic I was deeply uncomfortable and immediately went searching for something else to read to stop myself feeling vaguely ill. So that's your warning - if you're squeamish or don't like things involving dubious consent, you'll probably have the same reaction as I did, and may well want to avoid it.

That I said, a few months later I came across a link to the fic again. For various reasons, I decided to give it another chance, and this time it came out //much// more favourably - which may well have been because I wasn't so caught up in the slightly heavy writing style and knew what came next. In essence, the fic is about how the thoughts which left so much scarring on Ron at the end of book five begin to affect his actions - or try to, at least. Just as the thoughts left scars across Ron's arms, they keep intruding on his thoughts, giving him the impulse to do horrible things which he resists as hard as he can - but the problem is that at some point, //something// has to give. After weeks and weeks of this, Harry's finally had enough and decides to help Ron. This is where both my newfound appreciation for the fic and my older dislike for it come into play, as this results in some fairly rough sex play. The point of it all is that even though the thoughts keep trying to make Ron hurt Harry, Harry still trusts Ron and tries to get across to him that Ron just //isn't// going to hurt him, no matter what some foreign thoughts in his head make him want to do. It's difficult to tell whether the author intended it to seem as though Harry's trust helps Ron, or whether Harry's trust is merely a recognition of Ron's strength all along, but either way it results in a relatively unhurt Harry, and the deepening of his friendship with Ron.

The reason I liked it (the second time around, anyway) is that it while it's extrapolating on the trust that already exists between Harry and Ron, it draws your attention to the fact that the two of them do trust each other - even if it's doubtful that they trust each other quite //that// much.
[[Exposed|http://strangeplaces.net/silentpassion/fanfiction/exposed.htm]] by Haze, on [[Silent Passion|http://strangeplaces.net/silentpassion/]].

What I liked this for was the way the author uses both Heero and Trowa's ~POVs to see the other through a different light. It's not phrased as though the author is giving her opinions through the characters, as many do - not that that's a particularly bad thing, or that I would ever have noticed if not for this fic - but the way normal people think about others, with speculation and questions rather than certain knowledge.

That made no sense.

What I mean is that they think of each other, and the way they react around each other, and the way the other reacts around them, and try to make sense of it. Because neither knows the full story, they can't have concrete knowledge about each other (as the authors do and often let slip), but they try. The curiosity and confusion each exhibits makes this fic both enjoyable and believable.

I loved this fic. It never made sense to me that Iruka would automatically love Naruto, or even automatically forgive him for the Kyuubi. Iruka isn't a saint - he doesn't love everybody, and he isn't kind to everybody. He's kind to Naruto because Naruto has no one else, and Iruka sees himself in that. This fic detailed one potential beginning of their relationship in a way that I loved because it made Iruka //human//, instead of this too-perfect saint he is in too many fics.

Much the same as the [[other fic|Between Life and Love]] by Lilac Summers recced here, this fic is about the imperfect relationship between Cloud and Tifa in the wake of Aeris, focussing on the far-too-human aspects of their characters that make it difficult for them to reach out to another person - particularly another person who actually means something to them. The reason I like Cloud/Tifa is that it's //not// the overly-perfect sunshine-and-roses of Cloud/Aeris, and yet that's no reason to suppose the bond between them isn't just as strong. I have a very big soft spot for Sakura. Her character growth has been incredible and thoroughly believable in canon, even though Kishimoto still hasn't done enough to demonstrate this. (This may be down to me wanting more Sakura screentime in general, though.) This fic caught the essence of what I love about Sakura perfectly - her determination, her strength (not just physically), and the way her horrible, horrible temper regularly clashes with her polite upbringing. From Draco's perspective, this takes the "what would happen if Harry had gone into Slytherin instead" cliche and gives it a twist. It's a rather clever look at how things could have gone - the only problem I had with it was //nobody// has "what might have happened" dreams that are that detailed, complex, and long-lasting. The ending was a little . . . trite, too. However, due to the way the fic is written it's easy to ignore the beginning and the end and focus on the middle bit, which is where the fic earned this rec.

(And yes I know that made no sense. It's not supposed to until you've read the fic, otherwise I would have just spoiled a good fic for you. :P)

Ron certainly isn't, however. Running along fairly typical lines for a post-war-and-Harry's-fucked-up fic, it still managed to have enough charm (for a lack of a better expression) to capture my attention. I once read these described as the most perfect pair of songfics they'd ever read. I can't remember where I read that or who said it, but I have to agree with them. No matter how many times I read these fics, it always strikes me to the core how sad they are. Aoe says she may write a sequel to them one day (because she can't stand sad endings) but I'm not entirely sure if it would ruin it or not. It probably would.

Basically, Schuldig is ordered to fuck with Yohji. Literally. He does, but finds himself falling further than he should. And I can't pinpoint the reason why I fell in love with these fics because it's in the writing itself, but it's not the way it's written, if that makes sense. (Probably not, but heh.)

"Guilty" has my favourite line from any fic in it. I've overused the word poignant in this rec site, but poignant is exactly what it is.

I can't explain it better than that. (Which is a sad day for my explanation skills.) But if you ever read a WK fic, let it be "Guilty" - because then you won't be able to stop yourself from continuing on to "Found Out About You". What I liked about this was . . . well, everything. Nicky Mayfair portrays Yohji and Farfarello in a very interesting light, both in character and expanding on their character. It's Farfarello's interest in blood that starts everything - well, Yohji being Yohji too, but still. My very favourite aspect of this fic is Farfarello's desire for Yohji to hurt him, somehow. It sounds really disturbed when you just read it like that, but it makes so much more sense, and is made so much more poignant, in the fic itself. And Yohji does hurt him in a way Farfarello can't understand, but one I think every reader would.

[[Helpful Life Hints|http://ana-grrl.livejournal.com/110314.html]] by Ana.

Ana has written a huge amount of extremely good Firefly fics, such that for a while I couldn't remember why I'd picked this particular one to rec out of the lot. On rereading it, however, it became apparent that the reason was down to two things: 1) it's funny, and 2) it's a very good example of just how much Simon's world has turned upside down. Plus, Jayne. Jayne is always good.
[[His Belongings|http://www.fanfiction.net/s/999584/1/His_Belongings]] by Penelope Z.

This story was just //beautiful// - Ron is willing to wait for what he wants, the way he's waited for all his second-hand belongings. So even when he thinks something might be //his//, he's still willing to wait, until eventually it comes to him second-hand. Like nearly all of this author's writings, it's lyrical, painful, and poignant.
[[Homecoming|http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1481281/1/Homecoming]] by Myth720.

Irritatingly, this fic isn't finished and hasn't been updated since January 2004. It is a //fantastic// read, though, so . . . here's the rec! The fic takes place yonks after the series, when the genins are in their early thirties and there's a whole lotta backstory you don't get told at first. Naruto returns after being on an eight-year undercover mission a looooong way from Konoha, and Tsunade talks him into becoming the Jounin for a new team of genins, by telling him about a young boy he'd be coaching who's very much like he was. It seems like a repeat of Naruto's genin years all over again with the rivalry between the two boys on his team, except that both of them are Sasuke's sons. Through that link to the now-ANBU Sasuke (and a whole bunch of flashbacks) the story behind why Naruto took a mission that kept him away from the village for eight years is revealed. It also reveals the broken relationship between them, and its source.

The fic doesn't narrowly focus on the relationship between Naruto and Sasuke, however. The ~OCs involved (Sasuke's sons and their female teammate) are developed into characters in their own right and not just imitations of the series, with subplots of their own. Other characters from the series show up as well, developed as they would have over time - for example, Konohamaru is married and an ANBU under the command of Sasuke. Tsunade is showing her age, and worrying over her plans for the next Hokage. It's a detailed, complex, bloody brilliant fic and I wish the author would continue it, although that doesn't look likely at this stage.
[[I Will Carry You|http://miko-no-da.livejournal.com/131978.html]] by Miko no Da.

When I first played the game, having spoiled myself horribly for the ~FF7 series, this was exactly what I thought was going on in Cloud's head early on during the game. After I'd played the game all the way through, I couldn't quite see how that would match up with canon, but this fic manages to sort that out for me beautifully.
[[Important Things|http://harukami.insanejournal.com/638679.html]] by harukami.

One thing I really like is fics that cover pre-canon well. One of the objection I have with a lot of ~FF7 fics is that while they cover pre-canon, they do it awfully; for most of them I can see no way that it would slot into canon at all. This fic, however, is one of the times when pre-canon has been dealt with at the level it always should, and then some. This doesn't just feel like it //could// fit into pre-game events without bruising around the edges, it feels like it //does// fit into pre-game canon //and// provide foreshadowing for the events of the game.

And on top of that, it's Angel/David. //I am in my happy place.//
[[In Medias Res|http://www.geocities.com/emerald_gaze/fanfiction/AnK/kim/medias.htm]] by Kim Gasper, on [[Shounen Ai|http://shounen-ai.cjb.net/]].

I think I decided to rec this fic more for the style of writing than anything else. The author writes in the second person (first person being "I", third person being "he/she" and second person being "you", just in case you didn't know already) where the "you" is Riki. It details his thoughts and feelings at a point when Iason is making him masturbate for an audience. Riki's inner conflict, seen throughout the series, is set out clearly and eloquently by the author. It's also put on a more person level by the use of the second person, making it seem like you're really there, it's really you thinking those thoughts. Essentially, despite the smut this fic is a Riki character piece, and a very good one, at that.

//There is not enough Balthier/Vaan in the world.// You know this to be true, and this sort of fic is why there is not enough. I need more fics like this, dammit, not for there to be this and [[The Three Phases]] as decent Balthier/Vaan and //that's it//.

Rant aside, this fic details Balthier's attitude towards Vaan and some of the way it changes, from the first time they meet to the ~Ogir-Yensa Sandsea. I liked how the sections of the fic got shorter as it progressed, as though Balthier needed less and less to think through things to do with Vaan. A short, lovely fic.

I'm not sure what it was about this fic that hit me like a fist in the gut, but it took my breath away in the most wonderful way. It's not even completely in character or consistent with canon, but it's just //beautifully// written. A short, absolutely wonderful fic.
[[Kittens|http://reimars.livejournal.com/9419.html]] by reimars.

Kabuto is evil. We all knew that. This fic, however, demonstrates it in such a delightfully creative manner - even if, technically, it's little more than the cliche animal torture. But Kabuto's //inventive// about it - and never directly harms the kittens.
[[LIKE like|http://insaneidiot.livejournal.com/60710.html]] by insaneidiot.

After playing ~KH2, I sat back and realised that even for a Squenix game, I'd thought "gay", "so gay", and "are there //any// straight people in this?" far more often than was usual. And I mostly thought it about Sora and Riku - or at least I did on my second playthrough, when I actually knew the plot and what those frequent hints were all about. And so, with a headful of "Riku loev Sora" (unlike ~KH1, which left me with a headful of "Riku loev Sora loev Kairi" etc.), I went to find ~KH2 fic.

I stopped at FF.Net first. After about four seconds I stopped actually //reading// the fic summaries and started skimming to see how many mentioned mpreg. I got halfway down the first page and had a count of eight. I thus despaired of ever finding good Riku/Sora, especially good Riku/Sora that doesn't either a) ignore Kairi's existence, or b) make Kairi evil. Because //that's// so likely.

Then I found this fic, and realised that I could relax, because not only was there good Riku/Sora out there, there was Riku/Sora out there that was so good it //couldn't actually be improved on//. And I rejoiced.
[[Lather, Rinse, Repeat|http://community.livejournal.com/rwdmfqf/2625.html]] by Flora.

I had an impulse simply to say "PORN!" in this rec and leave it at that, but habit compels me to say at least a bit more. Draco has switched sides in this fic, which is one of those little fandom cliches which annoy me, but I can ignore it for now because it's really only relevant in setting up the situation he and Ron are in. Ron is the Auror assigned to guard him. Amidst lots of arguments about what is and is not acceptable as the bare necessities of a household which is at least //pretending// to be Muggle, there is lots of sex.

Um . . . that's about it. I liked the fic because Draco was still a snotty little git, but one who was having fun with it. And Ron, while not quite Ron (I can never picture him actually knowing anything about Muggles) is still close enough to being in character that it's passable.

Ouch. Incredibly bitter bittersweet. Just when you think everything makes sense, the world gets turned on its head - and sometimes the one who's punished isn't who you think it is. Aziraphale becomes human.
[[LoneWolf's Gundam Wing Page|http://www.geocities.com/kodoku_na_okami/]].

~LoneWolf no longer writes in the Gundam Wing fandom, unfortunately. However, his fics are incredible works whether they're recent or not. While I will recommend just about anything he writes, there are a few that I would say you should read over all the rest, and these are listed below:

"Crossing" series:
From Heero's POV, this is a slow and beautiful progression of the relationship between him and Duo. I read it years ago, so I can't really say more than that, but I would still thoroughly recommend these three fics to anyone who asks.

A Good Catholic Boy:
If another author had written this, all I would be able to say about it is that it is smut. With ~LoneWolf, however, there is a skilfully done amount of emotion and plot in there as well that makes it more than just smut.

H. l. hattai:
I like wolves. They're one of the few animals that I can find the time for. Werewolf fics, however, I usually cannot stand - but I truly loved this one.

Inbound Telemarketing:
Right now I couldn't really tell you why I liked this fic more than some of ~LoneWolf's other ones, except that he writes Heero's POV in such a way that I actually like the bastard. Which for me, is unusual.

Dark Matter:
First of all, a warning: this fic has graphic descriptions of rape and torture in it, although being ~LoneWolf he somehow manages not to get so much of the squick factor in there that another author would. That aside, the author puts a new and interesting spin on two people helping each other through a difficult experience - and he doesn't bad-mouth psychiatrists the way that other authors do, which I think is sensible and more realistic than most people think.

[[Love Remains|http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/louisew/LRmenu.html]] by girl_starfish, on [[Where Seas Collide|http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/louisew/]].

This is a far more plot-driven story than almost anything else I've recced on the site. Strangely enough, the plot revolves around a love triangle yet doesn't focus on anything to do with romance.

The summary on girl_starfish's profile on FF.N is "Tohru is delighted to live in the Souma mansion but quickly discovers the house hides a mystery. Can she rescue Yuki and Kyou from the family's dark past or will the curse claim another victim?" And that is sort of right, and sort of not. It's a little more complicated than that. Actually, it's a lot more complicated than that. Feh. I'm giving up on trying to explain.

There were two main reasons I liked this fic. 1) It's bloody brilliant. 2) It's pretty much the only plot-driven Fruits Basket fic I've ever seen that was legible. Other than that, though, it seems almost like if the Sohmas were under a different sort of curse, this is how it could turn out. The relationship between Yuki, Tohru and Kyou is beautifully done and perfectly in-character, as are all the rest of the characters. Except for Ayame, but then it's damned hard to keep //him// in character.

Whatever. Read the damn thing already.
[[Lustre|http://yearningvoid.net/calico/lustre.html]] by Calico and Julad, on [[Calico's Lair|http://yearningvoid.net/calico/]].

Draco gets given a beautiful snake for his birthday, except that it's a double-edged present indeed. When his snake becomes ill, he's so worried he swallows his pride and asks Harry for his help (since he can talk to snakes), and it turns out that the cure is something really rather peculiar. A typically cliche attempt to justify dumping Harry and Draco in bed together, but with enough clever "plot" around it to make me rec it here.
Mad Martha on [[livejournal|http://marthas-library.livejournal.com/]].

Yup, I'm doing an author rec. Haven't done one of those in quite a while. The main reason I decided to do an author rec for this particular person was actually because I couldn't decide between the fics she's written as to which was the best - everything she writes, even the Harry/Draco, is enjoyable. (Although I did find Harry an itsy bit out of character in her "Auror" series. But that is at least in part because I'm used to Teenage!Angsty!Harry that's going on in the books at the minute, and an angsty teenage Harry isn't what she's writing.)

When you're reading this author's fics, it's a good idea to check the listing in [[this post|http://marthas-library.livejournal.com/41770.html]] first. She's written several different series of fics, and without checking there it's easy to find yourself thoroughly confused because you've jumped into a sequel without realising it. Once that's out of the way, however, you'll find that she has a startlingly good grasp of spelling and grammar, and can plot fics very well. There's no fanfic cliches to be found in her writing, either, unless you count Draco being a "good" character in most of them - although with protest, often. Plus, with me being a Harry/Ron fiend, I spent several happy days going through all the different fics she's written of that pairing. Go read her stuff! It's great!

I've put links to both mediaminer and livejournal here in order to encompass the whole of Maldoror's work. Mediaminer holds her earlier fiction - Gundam Wing and most of her Naruto fics - while her livejournal is, so far as I am aware, the only place to find her One Piece fiction and the more recent Naruto fics.

Maldoror's fiction is truly incredible. She has a knack for getting into the psyche of the characters she's writing in a way that has always struck me as being spot on - the sole exception would be some of her earliest Gundam Wing works, which is easily forgiveabl
